TIPC to be Honored with Two Golden Quality Awards at 2023 23rd Golden Quality Awards for Public Construction Awards Ceremony

196
Date :2023-12-27
At this year’s Public Construction Commission’s 23rd Golden Quality Awards for Public Construction awards ceremony to be held on December 26th, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) will once again be walking away with two top awards. This governmental award is the nation’s highest recognition for excellence in public construction. TIPC’s two GQAs this year are for the land-based navigational range light tower improvement project at Port of Taichung and the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal project at Port of Kaohsiung.

At 12.5km in length and 2.5~4.5km in width, Port of Taichung continues to use visual navigational range markers to provide pilots with the accurate information necessary for captains to navigate through the port’s entrance. Matched pairs of navigational range light towers at the port keep ships properly aligned on their way in, ensuring navigational safety while traversing the navigational channel.

In recently years, new building construction and the installation of mast lighting and other facilities by businesses operating at the port coupled with the assembly and storage of large wind turbine components onsite have made the height of existing navigational range light towers inadequate to ensure clear visibility to ships on the water. In addition, long-term exposure to the elements made upgrading the existing towers to meet current needs unfeasible. Thus, the Port of Taichung land-based navigational range light tower improvement project was approved to install new towers made of strong and resilient structural steel pipe. Also, maintenance accessways to the towers in compliance with current labor safety regulations were installed. All of the towers have been fitted with IALA-compliant navigational lights that greatly improve visibility of these navigational aids both at night and in heavy fog. The five towers built under this project have become both the port’s highest structures and unmistakable symbols of port efficiency and safety.

Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal, TIPC’s other Golden Quality Award-winning construction project of 2023, is sheathed in the nation’s largest curved metal curtain wall fitted to beautiful effect with thousands of custom-designed glass panels. To ensure labor safety during construction, scaffolding work was limited while schedule and quality were maintained by preassembling much of the curtain wall components offsite, allowing for quick and simple installation onsite. Moreover, every structural steel pipe was marked with its installed angle of calibration, which also greatly improved the accuracy and speed of installation work. The aesthetic lines that define the completed terminal building are meant to inspire thoughts flowing ocean waves and make the building a central feature in Port of Kaohsiung’s new image.

The design of the terminal building reflects the cutting edge in both smart tech and sustainable construction. In addition to its outstanding application for Green Building Label silver certification, the terminal incorporates 5G wireless connectivity and is the new home of the port’s disaster response center. The terminal, which can concurrently berth and handle two 225,000GT-class (world’s largest) cruise ships, is tailored to provide an exceedingly comfortable and memorable welcome to arriving and departing passengers. Rhythm of the Sea Plaza on the terminal’s third floor provides spectacular views of the port and sea beyond, and is an ideal place for visitors and residents alike to relax and experience a unique take on the “Kaohsiung vibe”. Completion of the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal marks the final major addition to the port’s Asia New Bay Area, which already includes the Great Harbor Bridge, Kaohsiung Music Center, and Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.

Since 2012, TIPC has won numerous Golden Quality and Golden Safety awards in recognition of the firm’s diligence and accomplishments in construction planning and design and in project work quality and safety. TIPC upholds high and strict standards with regard to schedule adherence, quality, environmental protection, and safety to ensure all projects achieve the highest overall quality. Every award reflects well on our project teams and construction management and engineering department colleagues and encourages us to maintain and exceed our performance going forward. TIPC is committed to continued construction project excellence and to setting the bar even higher.
